STORY

You are a lone outlaw who rides around with his horse in wild Estonia and in the evening reaches the sleepy town of Põltsamaa. After wild night of drinking cheap whiskey you wake up next day in local sheriff’s prison cell and find out, that during drunken night you have broken most of the windows in Põltsamaa, made inappropriate approach attempts to 1994 beauty queen of Järvamaa and vomited to mayors cat.

Local people of Põltsamaa are not happy about that and are planning to come to hang you. Therefore sheriff has to let you out of cell and gives you 24 hour head start for escaping.

TASK

Saturday 7.03.2020 at 12:00 is the start at the Põltsamaa Selver car park (Jõgeva road 1a, Põltsamaa) and your goal is to get as far as possible in 24 hours.

WHAT DIRECTION CAN YOU GO?

Absolutely in every direction you want. You choose the direction and route. The only restriction is that major intercity roads can only be used for a maximum of 1 km and only once per each road. Crossing the road also counts as use. (above and below road both) Restrictions on the use of main roads also apply within settlements. Also, collector roads and light traffic roads next to major roads should not be used
NB! When moving parallelly with the major road on the fields or in the forests, the distance from the major road should be more than 500 meters.

The list of the main Estonian roads (roads numbered 1-11 and road number 92) can be found here:
https://et.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eesti_maanteede_loend#P%C3%B5himaanteed

Map of main intercity roads:

The main roads of Latvia, Russia and Finland cannot be used either. List of main roads in Latvia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_National_Roads_in_Latvia#State_Main_Roads

The exception is the dam of “Väike Väin” to Saaremaa, which can be crossed over the entire length.

CAN I STEAL A HORSE FOR MYSELF TO MOVE ON?

No! All forward movement must be on foot and no aids may be used. The only exception is the use of ferries to Saaremaa, Hiiumaa, Vormsi and Helsinki, but the distance traveled by the ferry is calculated off from the final result. The distance that is calculated off is: Saaremaa 6.7km, Hiiumaa 21.5km, Vormsi 9.2km and Helsinki 79.6km.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I DON’T HAVE A STRENGTH TO MOVE ON?

Then you have to sit down and cry, because no one will come to save you. You have to manage yourself and organize your own evacuation. If the situation is critical, call the Rescue Center, as the organizer does not have any capacity to rescue anyone. Phone number of Estonian Rescue Center is 112

WHEN 24 HOURS IS FULL, WILL ANYONE COME TO PICK ME UP?

No! You have to get yourself home.

ARE THERE ANY SANDWICHES AND PIES OFFERED SOMEWHERE?

No, you have to manage yourself! You can take stuff with you in backpack, use the saloons, shops and gas stations along the road.

IS THERE OUTSIDE HELP ALLOWED?

Yes, amigos can help with giving food and drink and changing clothes when needed, but they can’t help you to move on.

HOW ARE THE RESULTS CALCULATED?

All the fugitives get a GPS-tracker to see their movement. The result is the straight line between starting place and exact place where they are at 12:00 on Sunday, March 8.

If anyone decides to quit before the deadline, they must send to organizer an SMS to +372 53301838 with their name and time of finishing. In that case, the place at which he/she is at this time, shall be taken into account.

Please write this number somewhere and take it with you! If you also use your phone for navigation, you should definitely have a battery bank with you.
